“THE FUTURE IS A SAFE PLACE.” is a continuous poetry project based in the core belief made in the poem’s title statement.

Written in caps lock and Times New Roman font, the poem is continued in absolutist statements evoking declarative optimism, such as “IN THE FUTURE, FORGIVENESS IS THERE AND IT IS EASY.”, or, “IN THE FUTURE, WE HOLD HANDS WHILE CROSSING THE STREET.” The poem’s sections are printed using a thermal printer, producing 2.5”x3.5” paper prints reminiscent of transactional receipts, quickly archiving something with surety and actuality.

The concept of surety is at the core of this project. While today’s society has routinized the practice of knowing for the sake of being right, “THE FUTURE IS A SAFE PLACE.” introduces a counter perspective, questioning what it means to know. Because the future is forever the great unknowable, providing endless opportunity to make the future a truly safe place for everyone, the sureness of each statement requires the continuous choice to know it is so.
